A Quick Lifestyle Checklist for a More Effective CPAP Therapy

Updated: May 12, 2023

Are you noticing that some of the sleep symptoms you had prior to beginning successful CPAP therapy are occasionally starting to reoccur (like sleepiness during the day and inability to concentrate on normal tasks)? Of course it’s always advisable to consult with your providing physician concerning any major ongoing problems with your therapy. But often, troubleshooting potential day-to-day detriments to the system’s operation will restore its maximum benefit. Start by checking the following:

  • Have the machine’s filter(s) been changed? If a filter is damaged or has not been changed according to recommended schedule, it can adversely affect needed air pressure from your machine.

  • Are there any leaks in the system? Check the hose mask and cushion fit for possible air leakage. Being sure you are changing out your supplies as recommended will help ensure that you are receiving correct air pressure, as well as protect against harmful contaminants entering the system.

  • Are you getting adequate sleep during the night and staying on a regular sleep/wake schedule? Maintain as normal a sleep schedule as possible to help support benefits gained from your CPAP therapy.

  • Has your use of coffee, tea or other stimulative drinks increased during the day that would affect the overall quality of your sleep? It does not take a large increase of these beverages to negatively affect sleep quality.

  • Are you drinking an increased amount of alcohol just before bed? While beverages or medications containing alcohol can help increase sleep onset, they also can produce poor sleep quality during the last half of the night.
