Diabetes affects 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, and that figure is rising each year. Although it is not known exactly what causes diabetes, genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise seem to play a role.

Jay, Your post is truly motivational. Since my husband has worked for Siemens, I am familiar with the excellent reputation of Phillips. I will spread the word about the sleep apena test. I bet there are many baby boomers who aren't aware of the test, and would benefit greatly.
Keep up the great work!

I thank heaven that Jay is facing the challenge of weight loss as a contestant on the Biggest Loser but I am even more thankful for his health “Wake up Call” that resulted in him getting the testing that diagnosed his Sleep Apnea. As a Registered Nurse and Jay’s sister, I told Jay time after time that his inability to sleep more than a couple of hours per night wasn’t a character virtue but rather a health problem warning sign that needed to be medically evaluated. Based on my experience in critical cardiac care and as the wife of a man with sleep apnea, I warned Jay that his symptoms suggested that he could have sleep apnea and that he needed to be evaluated to have a comprehensive evaluation. Unfortunately until Biggest Loser my words didn't result in him taking action. As far as I’m concerned, his participation on the Biggest Loser and his subsequent treatment of sleep apnea saved his life! I know that diagnosing and treating sleep apnea saved my husband’s life - unfortunately my husband’s sleep apnea was diagnosed and treated after the damage caused by a heart attack occurred and coronary artery stint placement was necessary. I can’t stress enough that individuals with sleep issues need to seek and obtain medical care and evaluation. A good night’s sleep is as essential to good health as is proper eating & exercise. I am thankful that Jay is now getting the restful sleep that he deserves and his body (and his heart) requires!

As someone who is a health and wellness writer and mark-comm consultant who works for healthcare systems, I am all too familiar with the hidden threat of sleep apnea. I'm so glad you found out about it and because of the medical support you received, are still able to go on the show and pursue your weight-loss goals.

And as someone who knows Jay Jacobs, I know a spotlight will shine on this issue in a big way! Everyone's going to know about the dangers of sleep apnea. And that's a good thing!

GO GREEN (Jay, Jen and the Jets!)
